“Stained Glass” Crayon + Wax Paper Art

If your crayon collection resembles ours, there’s always a growing pile of crayon nubs and broken pieces at the bottom of the bucket. Recently my daughter has decided that these pieces just don’t color as beautifully so they’ve taken to occupying dead space. Repurposing seemed the perfect solution!

SUPPLIES:

- Crayons (the old, broken ones work well!)

- Wax paper

- Old baking sheet

- Plastic knife

- (Oven at 220 degrees F)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1- Gather some old crayons and have your child pick a few favorite colors or coordinating colors. Lay a piece of wax paper down on an old baking sheet (dry wax paper or traditional both work)

2- If you’re brave enough, allow your child to shave bits of the crayons onto the paper with a plastic knife (this was a little slow going- I may have used a cheese grater behind the scenes to expedite the process a little)

3- When you’re satisfied with the amount of crayon shavings and colors on the paper, carefully place into preheated 220deg oven.

4- Heat for 4-5 minutes: that’s it! The shavings don’t take long to melt!

5- Allow your child’s creation to cool (this doesn’t take long either, less than 10 minutes) before hanging or cutting into fun geometric suncatcher shapes to hang.

Another idea: if your kids love playing in big boxes, cut a window in the cardboard and make a “stained glass” window!

You could also have your child try coloring an abstract scene on the wax paper (some colors/papers work better than others) and then putting in the oven or adding shavings on top and then heating in the oven. I’d love to see your creations- tag me @ruthsager1 🥰
